Save our only HOME, the planet ‘88888’ Lights out

What is global Warming?

The term "global warming" refers to the warming in recent decades and its projected continuation, and implies a human influence. Other terms : "climate change" for human-caused change, and "climate variability" for other changes..

The term "climate change" recognizes that rising temperatures are not the only effect. Global warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth's near-surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century, and its projected continuation.

The average global air temperature near the Earth's surface increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the 100 years ending in 2005

Effects of global warming

An increase in global temperatures may in turn cause broader changes, including
glacial retreat, Arctic shrinkage, and Worldwide sea level rise.

Changes in the amount and pattern of precipitation may result in flooding and drought. There may also be changes in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.

Other effects may include changes in agricultural yields, addition of new trade routes, reduced summer streamflows, species extinctions, and increases in the range of disease vectors.

What YOU can do? (Mitigation) ~ Read Cost savers

- Energy efficiency and conservation (Easy n Best)
- Switch off electrical equipments not in use – TV, radio, AC, etc.
- Use electricity conservatively – e.g Think about Adequate lighting (not Lighting or excessive lighting)

Encouraging energy conservation among consumers is often advocated as a cheaper or more environmentally sensitive alternative to increased energy production.

- Building Design

- New buildings can be constructed using passive solar building design, low-energy building, or zero-energy building techniques, using renewable heat sources.
- Existing buildings can be made more efficient through the use of insulation, high-efficiency appliances double- or triple-glazed gas-filled windows, external window shades, and building orientation
- To design buildings that are more energy efficient to cool by using lighter-coloured, more reflective materials in the development of urban areas (e.g. by painting roofs white) and planting trees.

This saves energy because it cools buildings and reduces the urban heat island effect thus reducing the use of air conditioning.

- Alternate energy sources
- Nuclear energy
- Renewable energy (Wind power)
-
- Eliminating Waste Methane

Methane is a significantly more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Burning one molecule of methane generates one molecule of carbon dioxide. Burning methane which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere (such as at oil wells, landfills, coal mines, waste treatment plants, etc.) provides a net greenhouse gas emissions benefit.
However, reducing the amount of waste methane produced in the first place has an even greater beneficial impact.

15. Closing thoughts

1. It's all about YOU….Concentration

Practice the 5 More Rule (Tried this and got some real cool results…)

To increase the length of time in which you can comfortably concentrate, every time you feel like taking a break force yourself to go five minutes more and then take your break.

Or, if you are working on a series of tasks or items like assembly or database entries, force yourself to do five more before taking a break.

2. Health tips…How To Improve Eye Sight

Stand about two feet from a doorpost.

Close one eye.
Hold a pencil up to the doorpost.
Focus on the pencil.
Move the pencil slowly toward your nose, focussing constantly on the pencil.
When the pencil touches your nose, move the pencil slowly back toward the doorpost.

Repeat with the other eye.
For the next exercise, move the pencil from left to right and back again.
Focus on the pencil without moving your head.
Check your diet.

On some days you will notice that your eyesight is worse than on other days.
Try to remember what you ate that affected your diet: Eggs, chicken, milk, sugar, etc.
Avoid the foods that worsen your eyesight.
Eat the foods that improve your eyesight.

3. Jokes Corner

Bhola calls the Help Desk to complain that there's something wrong with his password.
No, it's not the usual caps-lock problem.

"The problem is that whenever I type the password, it just shows stars," he says.
"Those asterisks are to protect you," the Help Desk technician explains,
"so if someone were standing behind you, they wouldn't be able to read your password."

"Yeah," he says, "but they show up even when there is no one standing behind me."

4. Thought for the Week

Half the trouble in this world is owing to the fact that most of us don’t realize that we are not one
but three persons.

The person we think we are.
The person others think we are.
The person we really are.
As long as we try to fool ourselves that we are other than what we really are,
we can find neither peace not happiness nor even success

5. Lateral thinking
You have three cases of fruit. One contains just mangoes, one contains just oranges, and one contains a mixture of both. Each box is labeled -- one says "mangoes," one says "oranges," and one says "mangoes and oranges."
It is also known that none of the boxes are labeled correctly. How can you label the boxes correctly if you are only allowed to take and look at just one piece of fruit from just one of the boxes?

Good One…Think through logically…answers somewhere after the article on thought provokers..

6. Management Thirukkurals…The Gossip

A woman repeated a bit of gossip about a neighbor. Within a few days the whole community knew the story.
The person it concerned was deeply hurt and offended.
Later the woman responsible for spreading the rumor learned that it was completely untrue.
She was very sorry and went to a wise old sage to find out what she could do to repair the damage.

"Go to the marketplace," he said, "and purchase a chicken, and have it killed. Then on your way home, pluck its feathers and drop them one by one along the road."Although surprised by this advice, the woman did what she was told.

The next day the wise man said, "Now go and collect all those feathers you dropped yesterday and bring them back to me."The woman followed the same road, but to her dismay, the wind had blown the feathers all away.
After searching for hours, she returned with only three in her hand.

"You see," said the old sage, "it's easy to drop them, but it's impossible to get them back.So it is with gossip. It doesn't take much to spread a rumor, but once you do, you can never completely undo the wrong."

7. Mind your Language..Contd.

Tip 6:

Indian Context : Do not use the term "screwed up" liberally. If a situation is not good, Do not use words such as "shucks“ or "pissed off".

Int’nl Customers Context : It is better to say "The situation is messed up".

Tip 7
When explaining some complex issue, stop occasionally and ask "Does that make sense?".
This is preferable than "Did you understand me?"

8. Management Fundas

One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big notice on the door on which was written:
'Yesterday the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away.

We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym'.
In the beginning, they all got sad for the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who was that man who hindered the growth of his colleagues and the company itself.

The excitement in the gym was such that security agents were ordered to control the crowd within the room.
The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up.
Everyone thought: 'Who is this guy who was hindering my progress? Well, at least he died!'.

One by one the thrilled employees got closer to the coffin, and when they looked inside it they suddenly became speechless. They stood nearby the coffin, shocked and in silence, as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul. There was a mirror inside the coffin: everyone who looked inside it could see himself.

There was also a sign next to the mirror that said:'There is only one person who is capable to set limits to your growth: it is YOU. You are the only person who can revolutionize your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself. Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your partner changes, when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the only one responsible for your life. 'The most important relationship you can have is the one you have with yourself'Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don't be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses: be a winner, build yourself and your reality. It's the way you face Life that makes the difference.

9. Tips…Speeding your Home PC

Here are some useful tips to speed your home PC

Wallpapers: They slow your whole system down, so if you're willing to compromise, have a basic plain one instead!

Minimizing: If you want to use several applications at the same time, then minimize those you are not using. This helps reduce the overload on RAM.

Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, ! the faster your PC.

Take your PC to Bed: Using the Advanced Power Management feature under Windows 98 gives you the option to use the sleep command. That way, you can send your PC to sleep i! nstead of shutting it down and then restarting it. It's as simple as pressing a button and then pressing the same button to wake it up. You can tell Windows after how many minutes/hours of inactivity to automatically sleep the machine in the Advanced Power Management section of the Control Panel.

His parents are illiterate. He has no legs and moves around in his powered wheel chair. Ever smiling, optimistic and full of spirit; that is Naresh.

He says, "God has always been planning things for me.

Naga's thoughts – Summary

14. Thought provokers…Inflation

Give this a good reading and think it over couple of times..YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

A man eats two eggs each morning for breakfast. When he goes to the Kirana store he pays Rs. 12 a dozen. Since a dozen eggs won't last a week he normally buys two dozens at a time. One day while buying eggs he notices that the price has risen to Rs. 16. The next time he buys groceries, eggs are Rs. 22 a dozen.

When asked to explain the price of eggs the store owner says, 'The price has gone up and I have to raise my price accordingly' . This store buys 100 dozen eggs a day. He checked around for a better price and all the distributors have raised their prices. The distributors have begun to buy from the huge egg farms. The small egg farms have been driven out of business. The huge egg farms sell 100,000 dozen eggs a day to distributors. With no competition, they can set the price as they see fit. The distributors then have to raise their prices to the grocery stores. And on and on and on.

As the man kept buying eggs the price kept going up. He saw the big egg trucks delivering 100 dozen eggs each day. Nothing changed there. He checked out the huge egg farms and found they were selling 100,000 dozen eggs to the distributors daily. Nothing had changed but the price of eggs..

Then week before Diwali the price of eggs shot up to Rs. 40 a dozen. Again he asked the grocery owner why and was told, 'Cakes and baking for the holiday'. The huge egg farmers know there will be a lot of baking going on and more eggs will be used. Hence, the price of eggs goes up. Expect the same thing at Christmas and other times when family cooking, baking, etc. happen. This pattern continues until the price of eggs is Rs. 60 a dozen.
The man says, ' There must be something we can do about the price of eggs'.

He starts talking to all the people in his town and they decide to stop buying eggs. This didn't work because everyone needed eggs. Finally, the man suggested only buying what you need. He ate 2 eggs a day. On the way home from work he would stop at the grocery and buy two eggs. Everyone in town started buying 2 or 3 eggs a day.

The grocery store owner began complaining that he had too many eggs in his cooler. He told the distributor that he didn't need any eggs. Maybe wouldn't need any all week. The distributor had eggs piling up at his warehouse. He told the huge egg farms that he didn't have any room for eggs would not need any for at least two weeks.

At the egg farm, the chickens just kept on laying eggs. To relieve the pressure, the huge egg farm told the distributor that they could buy the eggs at a lower price.

The distributor said, ' I don't have the room for the %$&^*&% eggs even if they were free'. The distributor told the grocery store owner that he would lower the price of the eggs if the store would start buying again.

The grocery store owner said, 'I don't have room for more eggs. The customers are only buying 2 or 3 eggs at a time. Now if you were to drop the price of eggs back down to the original price, the customers would start buying by the dozen again'.

The distributors sent that proposal to the huge egg farmers but the egg farmers liked the price they were getting for their eggs but, those chickens just kept on laying. Finally, the egg farmers lowered the price of their eggs. But only a few paisa.

The customers still bought 2 or 3 eggs at a time. They said, 'when the price of eggs gets down to where it was before, we will start buying by the dozen.'

Slowly the price of eggs started dropping. The distributors had to slash their prices to make room for the eggs coming from the egg farmers. The egg farmers cut their prices because the distributors wouldn't buy at a higher price than they were selling eggs for. Anyway, they had full warehouses and wouldn't need eggs for quite a while. And those chickens kept on laying. Eventually, the egg farmers cut their prices because they were throwing away eggs they couldn't sell.

The distributors started buying again because the eggs were priced to where the stores could afford to sell them at the lower price. And the customers starting buying by the dozen again.

Now, transpose this analogy to the gasoline industry.

What if everyone only bought Rs 500 worth of Petrol each time they pulled to the pump? The dealer's tanks would stay semi full all the time. The dealers wouldn't have room for the gas coming from the huge tanks. The tank farms wouldn't have room for the petrol coming from the refining plants. And the refining plants wouldn't have room for the oil being off
loaded from the huge tankers coming from the oil fiends. Just Rs 500 each time you buy gas. Don't fill up the tank of your car. You may have to stop for gas twice a week, but the price should come down.

Think about it.

Also, don't buy anything else at the fuel station; don't give them any more of your hard earned money than what you spend on gas, until the prices come down...'

Answers to Lateral thinking

Take a fruit from the box labeled "mangoes and oranges".
Say that the fruit is mangoes. Take the "mangoes" label and put it on that box.
Remove the "oranges and mangoes" label and put it on the box marked "oranges". It couldn't go on the box that had previously had the "mangoes" label, because that would mean that the "oranges" label couldn't be changed, and we have been told that all the boxes are mislabeled.
Move the "oranges fruit" label to the unlabeled box.
