1. Its all about YOU …….WOW!!!

Last spring I was walking in a park. A short distance ahead of me was a mom and her three-year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string that was attached to a helium balloon.
All of a sudden, a sharp gust of wind took the balloon from the little girl.. I braced myself for some screaming and crying. But, no! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon go skyward, she gleefully shouted out, "Wow!"

I didn't realize it at that moment, but that little girl taught me something.

Later that day, I received a phone call from a person with news of an unexpected problem. I felt like responding with "Oh no, what should we do?" But remembering that little girl, I found myself saying, "Wow, that's interesting! How can I help you?"

One thing's for sure - life's always going to keep us off balance with its unexpected problems. That's a given. What's not preordained is our response. We can choose to be frustrated or fascinated.

No matter what the situation, a fascinated "Wow!" will always beat a frustrated "Oh, no."

So the next time you experience one of life's unexpected gusts, remember that little girl & make it a "Wow!" experience.

The "Wow!" response always works . . .

2. Thought for this week

There is a story about an ancient sage who was called ugly names by a passerby.
The sage listened unperturbed till the man ran out of words.

He asked the man, ‘If an offering is not accepted, who it belongs to?’
The man replied, ‘It belongs to the person who offered it.’
The sage said, ‘I refuse to accept your offerings’ and walked away leaving the man dazed.

No can make you feel inferior without your permission.

3. Lateral thinking…Philosopher's Clock

One philosopher had a clock, which he had forgotten to wind up. He had no other clock, watch, radio, TV, phone or any other device telling the time. So when his clock stopped he went to a friend, stayed there the whole night and when he came home, he knew the right time. How could he know?
Another classic….come on guys, this is easy…Answers at the end..

4. Health Yoga

Yoga and meditation will improve your healthYoga postures put gentle pressure on the internal organs of the body and help them to function properly.

In particular the postures help your digestive system to work smoothly and thus avoid problems such as constipation, acidity and indigestion, which are common conditions that can lead to more serious problems later on.

Meditation and deep relaxation can be just what you need to lower your blood pressure. Thus, yoga postures plus meditation is a great combination for maintaining and improving health.

Here is a posture to start the Yoga Series..

Touch-my-knee:
Lie on your back. Lift your one knee and bend it towards your chest with the help of your hands. Try and make your nose touch your knee. The second leg remains on the ground. Once we become comfortable, try raising the second leg in the air till about a 45 degrees tilt. Remain in the pose for around 30 seconds. Then slowly get back and relax. Alternate with the other leg. Repeat the round twice.

5. Management quick tips.. A Successful Relationship . . .

A boy was born to a couple after eleven years of marriage. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eyes. When the boy was around two years old, one morning the husband saw a medicine bottle open.

He was late for work so he asked his wife to cap the bottle and keep it in the cupboard. His wife, preoccupied in the kitchen totally forgot the matter. The boy saw the bottle and playfully went to the bottle and fascinated by its color, drank it all. It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant for adults in small dosages. When the child collapsed the mother hurried him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was stunned.

She was terrified how to face her husband. When the distraught father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and uttered just four words..

QUESTIONS:

1. What were the four words?
2. What is the implication of this story?

ANSWER:

The husband just said "I Love You Darling" The husband's totally unexpected reaction is proactive behavior. The child is dead. He can never be brought back to life. There is no point in finding fault with the mother. Besides, if only he had taken time to keep the bottle away, this would not happen.

No one to be blamed. She had lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was consolation and sympathy from the husband. That is what he gave her. If everyone can look at life with this kind of perspective, there would be much fewer problems in the world. Take off all your envies, jealousies, unforgiving attitude, selfishness, and fears. And you will find things are actually not as difficult as you think.

"A successful relationship requires falling in love many times with the same person . . . "

Girl: ya
Prof: open your books and study.

7. Management thoughts..The Window

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room's only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window. The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance. As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene. One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind 's eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window.

The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside. He strained to slowly turn to look out the window besides t he bed.It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you."

Epilogue:There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations. If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy."Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present"

Philosopher’s Clock - solution

Clocks can measure time even when they do not show the right time. You just have to wind the clock up and...We have to suppose that the journey to the friend and back lasts exactly the same time and the friend has a clock (showing the correct time) - it would be too easy if mentioned in the riddle.

9. Tip for this week…. Fuel - Full Tank

Do not pump full tank of petrol.

Many of us are not aware that the petrol kiosk pump has a return pipe-line (in Pink ).

When the petrol tank (in the car) reaches full level, there is a mechanism to trigger off the pump latch and at the same time a return-valve is opened (at the top of the pump station) to allow excess petrol to flow back into the sump.

But the return petrol has already pass through the meter, meaning you are donating the petrol back to Oil companies

10. Closing thoughts…

Traffic Nelavaram: Here was a Signature that one of our readers (Srinath) found in a Bangalorean….

"Most people drive on the left of the road. In Bangalore, we drive on what's left of the road."

Interesting..!!! Is Chennai far behind? …the 2 recent political "Meetings" ensured that the whole Chennai was totally thrown out of gear, each of them trying to outbid the other in terms of who created the Maximum Chaos (Sorry Read that as Maximum Impact or
Max Mileage)

While the causes they stood for might be a very worthy cause (in their viewpoint)….Pause for a minute to think about…
- The amount of CO2 generated due to the traffic jams
- Ambulances with patients struck in traffic
- Pregnant women with labor pain unable to reach hospitals
- School children (Saw a school van with a few children at 8.45PM)
- People – Employees, parents, children, spouses unable to reach their homes and loving ones waiting for them
- Diwali eve…people trying to desperately reach Railway/ Bus stations to go to their native places…

Here is a Novel protest in UK that another friend shared….Truck drivers to show their protest, started driving slowly On a freeway (where speeds are 100 Miles/ Hour range), the drivers started driving at 30-40 m / Hour

Imagine the frustration of people driving in their cars….Interesting ways / means….

Chandrayaan
Chandrayaan is making very good progress and it is very heartening to hear this. As more and more details are being shared, the technological brilliance of this wonder machine is being shared to the media and public – Chandrayaan is approx 160, 000 kms away from earth and imagine our scientists communicating and controlling the satellite sitting in ISRO Bangalore…WOW!!!

Hithendran effect
After the wonderful act of Hithendrans parents (Re-cap Hithendran had road accident, and in hospital – he was alive, but was declared brain dead - His parents donated all his organs to other needy people – through which, he is still alive and seeing the world)
This has prompted more people to do such acts and this has now being termed as Hithendran effect…..

So what actions are you proposing to do to live even after we are long gone….

11. Financial Crisis

With the BSE Sensex closing today at sub-9000 levels, we could a sense of panic amongst the relevant stakeholders (MFs, Brokers, and the Individual investors).

The unfolding scene in the Indian Stock Market is more or less similar to what happened in 1992 and 2000. Only that the causes (as well as the pace of the final CRASH) are getting to be different this time. In 1992 - remember the Harshad Mehta episode? - the market did similar roller-coaster rides before the final knock made scores of Brokers and Innocent investors lose money (and their lives).

The way the market has crashed today - BSE Index closing at 8701 compared to the all-time high of circa 20000 a few months ago - is probably only a stage closer to the ensuing climax - post Diwali? I even dread to think of the possible implications due to further fall, in the days to come, on the lives of the defaulting brokers as well as the small-time investors.

The irony is that the collapse, this time, has not much to do with our country's own economic fundamentals (which is stated to be in a lot better shape compared to most other countries) -

BUT it is the GLOBALISATION inter-linkages which is playing the havoc in the Indian market. So the bitter truth is that our market performance is largely dependent (thanks to the GLOBALISATION) on how the global markets have performed, and our internal factors contribute very little to the market performance. The harsh reality is that no single economy is insulated from what happens to the rest of the Globe.

There was an interesting article on the Great Depression…The stock Market crashed on Oct 29th 1929….and helped in the rise of Adolf Hitler (!!!)
