Good to Great # 36, Republic day special

"The Fish rots from the Head"

This is an old Chinese proverb…How simply put, but how true!!! Well – the leader or each of us in our own roles, need to ensure that there flows a positive energy in our own self and into our teams. Clearly absence of thinking or putting it differently, absence of growth (from where we are) would only aid in rotting of the mind or the Head…
So wear the thinking cap regularly and continue to look for opportunities to grow – at a personal level and in taking your organisation forward to newer grounds – Let the "Head" stay active and spread positive energy all around.

Friends, With these simple, yet powerful thoughts, here comes Edition # 36 of Good to Great… please read in Leisure and continue to share your articles, jokes, puzzles, feedback to balajineela@gmail.com

1. Its all about YOU

"Obstacles can't stop you.
Problems can't stop you.
Most of all, other people can't stop you.
Only you can stop you."

Life span is too small. So do not waste it in anger, fight. Live every moment as if there is no tomorrow.
Life ends & one leaves the world physically but leaves lasting good memories in heart of loved ones as well as leaves a little smile & sweet memories on clean few (may be very SMALL NUMBER) friend's face & in their hearts.

I am working on incrementing this NUMBER every day.

2. Thought for this week

A young soldier was badly injured.

A military doctor told him ‘young man, I am sorry. Do you have any wish? Do you want to send any messages to your loved one?’

Soldier took 10-dollar note and gave it to the doctor.
The doctor asked, ‘To whom I have to send this money?’

I bet these 10 dollars, I won’t die.’ Do you know what happened? That soldier died, but at the age of 70.

This incident happened during World War II. Believe in yourself. Rest assured.

3. Health.. Be Good to yourself

- Get Enough sleep
- Practice deep breathing while relaxing your muscles one at a time
- While working with computers, take a break for at least 15 minutes for 4-5 times & go for a walk
- Do Eye exercises while taking the walk
- Take short stretch breaks throughout the day
- Try taking Yoga / meditation to energize yourself and reduce stress
- Keep your back straight while working on the computer

4. India glorious…Know Our Culture -Republic Day

History
Although India obtained its independence on August 15, 1947, the Constitution of India came into effect only on January 26, 1950. During the transition period from 1947 to 1950, King George VI was the head of country. C. Rajagopalachari served as the Governor-General of India during this period. Following January 26, 1950, Rajendra Prasad was elected as the president of India..

Celebrations
To mark the importance of this occasion, every year a grand parade is held in the capital, New Delhi, from the Rashtrapati Bhavan (President's Palace), along the Rajpath, past India Gate and on to the historic Red Fort. The different regiments of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force march past in all their finery and official decorations. The President of India who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Armed Forces, takes the salute. Parades demonstrating the cultures of the various states and regions of India are also held and broadcast nationwide on television. The parade also includes vibrant displays and floats and traditionally ends with a flypast by Indian Air Force jets.

Celebrations are also held in state capitals, where the governor of the state unfurls the national flag. If the Governor of the state is unwell, or is unavailable for some reason, the Chief Minister of the state assumes the honour of unfurling the National Flag of India.

Republic Day Parade
The Republic Day Parade is an annual military and cultural parade held in the Indian Capital of New Delhi on 26 January, the Republic Day of India. Republic Day is celebrated with the hoisting of the national flag, and parades by the armed forces and school children all over the country.
Before the parade starts, the Prime Minister of India lays a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate, commemorating all the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country. The President is accompanied by a notable foreign Head of State - who is the Chief Guest at the celebration. The President presides over the function. Soon afterward, a 21 gun salute is presented, the President unfurls the National Flag and the National Anthem is played. This marks the beginning of the parade.

The Parade begins with winners of gallantry awards passing the President in open jeeps. Various divisions of the Armed Forces then salute the President of India. The parade also sees the Indian Military showcasing its latest acquisitions such as tanks, missiles, radars, etc. The military contingent contains representatives of all three divisions of the Armed Forces (air, sea and land). There are also massive parades of Police contingents, Home guards , Civil Defence and the National Cadet Corps.

The military parade is followed by a colourful cultural parade. India's rich cultural heritage is paraded with tableaux from various states. Each state depicts its unique festivals, historical locations and art forms. The most cheered section of the parade is the children who have won National Bravery Awards. They ride past the dais on elephants. School-children from all over the country also participate in the parade. The parade also includes displays of skilful motor-cycle riding, usually by a division from one of the Armed Forces.

The official conclusion of Republic Day festivities is much later - on the evening of January 29, i.e. three days after Republic Day. This ceremony is called Beating the Retreat.

The processions start by moving down from the Rashtrapati Bhavan through Rajpath, past the India Gate and on to Connaught Place, the heart of the city, to enter the historic Red Fort. The crowds sit on either side of the route and the VIP enclosure is on the Southern flank of Rajpath, near India Gate.

5. Management quick tips..
A good old story – a different version!!!

First-year students at Texas A & M's Vet school were attending their first Anatomy class, with a real dead pig.

They all gathered around the surgery table with the body covered with a White sheet. The professor started the class by telling them, 'In Veterinary Medicine it is necessary to have two important qualities as a Doctor: The first is that you not be disgusted by anything involving the Animal body'. For an example, the Professor pulled back the sheet, touched his finger in the mouth of the dead pig, withdrew it and put his Finger in his mouth. 'Go ahead and do the same thing,' he told his students.

The students freaked out, hesitated for several minutes. But eventually took turns putting their finger in the mouth of the dead pig and tasted in their mouth.

When everyone finished, the Professor looked at them and said, 'The Second most important quality is observation. I touched with my middle Finger and tasted on my index finger. Now learn to pay attention…

Moral of the story:
LIFE IS TOUGH, BUT IT’S A LOT TOUGHER WHEN YOU ARE STUPID- JOHN WAYNE

6. Jokes corner..Stolen Money

A Mafia Godfather finds out that his book-keeper has screwed him for ten million bucks.

This book-keeper is deaf and it was considered an occupational benefit why he got the job in the first place, since it was assumed that a deaf book-keeper would not be able to hear anything and never have to testify in court.

When the Godfather goes to shake down the book-keeper about his missing $10 million bucks, he takes along his lawyer, who knows sign language.
The Godfather asks the book-keeper: "Where is the $10 million bucks you embezzled from me?"
The lawyer, using sign language, asks the book-keeper where the money is hidden.

The book-keeper signs back: "I don't know what you are talking about."
The lawyer tells the Godfather: "He says he doesn't know what you're talking about."

That's when the Godfather pulls out a 9mm pistol, puts it to the book-keeper's temple, cocks it up and says: "Ask him again!"
The attorney signs to the underling: "He'll kill you for sure if you don't tell him!"

The book-keeper signs back: "OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo's backyard in Queens!"

The Godfather asks the lawyer: "Well, what'd he say?"
The lawyer replies: "He says you don't have the guts to pull the trigger!!"

7. Management thoughts.. WHEN A LIZARD CAN, WHY CAN'T WE??

This is a true story that happened in Japan. In order to renovate the house, someone in Japan breaks open the wall. Japanese houses normally have a hollow space between the wooden walls.

When tearing down the walls, he found that there was a lizard stuck there because a nail from outside hammered into one of its feet. He sees this, feels pity, and at the same time curious, as when he checked the nail, it was nailed 10 years ago when the house was first built.

What happened?

The lizard has survived in such position for 10 years!!!!!!!!!! In a dark wall partition for 10 years without moving, it is impossible and mind-boggling. Then he wondered how this lizard survived for 10 years! without moving a single step--since its foot was nailed!

So he stopped his work and observed the lizard, what it has been doing, and what and how it has been eating.
Later, not knowing from where it came, appears another lizard, with food in its mouth.

Ah! He was stunned and touched deeply.

For the lizard that was stuck by nail, another lizard has been feeding it for the past 10 years...
Imagine? it has been doing that untiringly for 10 long years, without giving up hope on its partner.

Think, will u do that to your partner? Think that will you do it to your Mom, Who brought you after a big struggle of nine long months? Imagine what a small creature can do that a creature blessed with a brilliant mind can't.

As information and communication technology advances,
our access to information becomes faster and faster.

But the distance between human beings . . . is it getting closer as well?
