Good to Great

The Mundane of the routine..

Attended a company sponsored training program at Bangkok – so whats different – nothing! Another training program, another refresher of lot of things "we know" – enjoy the three days,
Relax (NO NO mails right – the beauty of residential, non office training programs), get back to work & life moves on….

Wait wait!!!
This training program was different – more dialogues then Monologues, apart from the concepts so well shared, the times given for introspection, sharing really meant a lot in ingraining the learning's into our system.

More sharings – mind mapping, Breathing tips (Hey, thought we Indians invented it…!), attitude tips, etc., etc!!!

As always (in any training program), my mind was racing to apply these great principles that I was learning- office, home, personally, etc., - I am going to be an All New Balaji!!!

Well those were the thoughts till.......the day, when I land in Chennai.

Come Home – have the pending "unfinished" things to attend to..
My daughter reminds me of the things that I have promised to do/ buy for her..
My wife follows through on the pending household things that I have promised to do
Office – Same people, same topics for discussions; nothing has changed from the previous week – it was only a 4 day trip, right!.

By Mid-day I realise that I am caught in the mundane of the routine – Stop Stop!!!
Want to implement the learning's.

Addendum: Come Weekend - had to get involved in a major "Vaika thagararu"..
Ahhhhh…Challenging times

Stop! What can I do to translate the learning's into actions…decide on a 5 course action, but obviously need support.

OK, let me get started – did that, let us see..!!! will update in a later edition on how much successful I was.

Stepping slightly away….

Was continued to be amazed by a few things that stand out in Thailand (visiting Thailand after 5 years). India has its own strengths, cultures…but some things were different in Thailand, which we can definitely look at..

- Was WOWed by their Products, Packaging, Marketing, customer service –
Simple e.g. Food Industry - the quality of fruits was amazing – maybe genetically engineered – but the quality
Was so good and the size of fruits was really amazing. Also seemed to have become an all season affair with even water melon being available in this season (Good quality, not end of season left-over).

Further they package it nicely (inexpensive, still) – easy to handle, eat and dispose
Prices – absolutely reasonable

Customer Service – very friendly – also stems from the fact that they know that Tourism is one of the backbones of the economy. A Smiling face is always good to look at..Hai-na!!

The same goes with a host of other products – the customer focus is so intensive; we can quite pick some lessons from out there.

Yes, they can also look at picking lot of lessons from us - you know what I mean!!! ;-)

I was having trouble with my computer so I called Robert, the 11 year old next door whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over.
Robert clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem.

As he was walking away, I called after him, 'So, what was wrong?'
He replied, 'It was an ID ten T error.'
I didn't want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, 'An, ID ten T error? What's that? In case I need to fix it again.'
Robert grinned. 'Haven't you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?'
'No,' I replied.
'Write it down,' he said, 'and I think you'll figure it out.'
So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T

Thought Provoking thoughts…B/f Ramalingam

A rich man had a pet dog and took care of it very well. But the dog did not enjoy the meals provided to it. Like any other being, it too wanted a change. It left the house and wandered on the street to look out for its food. It roamed around in vain for days together. It was unable to fight the street dogs. On not having got food even from the garbage and the leaves thrown there with leftover morsels, it came across a dried bone. Being hungry, the dog bit the bone. While chewing the bone, its gum got punctured and blood started oozing out. In the process, the dog thought that the blood was coming out from the bone and started chewing well.

A wise dog looked at it and said, Hey! The blood is coming from your gyms and not from the bone; it is only a dried bone that your chewing.’ The dog looked at it with disdain and said, ‘Until I bit the bone, my tongue had not known the taste of blood! Only after biting this bone, I came to know this taste. So, the blood is coming from the bone. You cannot trick me!’ Saying so, the dog bit the bone more ferociously.

Similarly someone may say “Before I came in contact with the object I was not happy. After I came in contact with the object, I am happy… Happiness comes from the object.’ This is dog’s logic!

Think for a while! Is there any difference between the dog biting the dried-bone and those human beings gaining pleasure from cigarettes and alcohol?
